Is the world we feel really the world as it is? (Or are we the brains in bottles and dreaming the world?) The question raised by many philosophist  now changed into the understanding that the things we percept are "distorted" by the characteristics of our sensory system. Since we can live our daily life without any problems, in a sense the "distortion" is distortion which is optimized for living.

In our laboratory, Systems Function and Morphology, School of Medicine, University of Toyama, we study the system which extract the important information from the environment with some distortions and process adaptively - the sensory system. We mainly focus on the mechanisms for reception and perception of sound.  We are recruiting graduate students who will work with us to elucidate the system which is common but enigmatic!
